Movies Came Out In (2003)
Winner:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – Very much enjoyed the finale in the trilogy. Gandalf, Aragorn, Sam, Frodo, etc… go up against Sauron and his army at Mount Doom with the one ring to rule them all. Action packed, satisfying conclusion to the story, extremely well done. Not to be watched with seeing the first two in the trilogy. I highly recommend watching with closed captions on as well to catch some of the dialog you might otherwise miss.
Lost in Translation – I thought it was just OK. I did not see it when it was originally released, but rather just for this viewing endeavor. I didn’t dislike it. It was just a story (a has-been movie star meets a somewhat neglected young lady in Tokyo and they form an unlikely friendship), nothing more, nothing less. Had some funny moments, but overall the acting was just so-so. It did make me want to visit Japan, as it seems like a pretty cool place to visit.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World – Not a huge fan of this movie, even though I’ve seen it several times. I think for some reason it’s going to get better on repeat viewings, but it’s never the case. Set during the Napoleonic wars, an English vessel pursues a French ship around the horn of South America, while the British captain pushes his crew to their limits.
Mystic River – Love this movie. The Story, the acting, amazing performances, etc… all fantastic. Gets me every time. The plot follows three childhood friends in adulthood who’s lives are all touched by an unthinkable tragedy.
Seabiscuit – I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, and have watched it several times since my original viewing. Set during the Great Depression, it’s the story of an underdog racehorse, his rider, trainer and owner, all overcoming different adversities to become champions. I highly recommend this film.
