Movies Came Out In (2012)
Winner:
Argo – Just okay, in my opinion. Worth watching, but didn’t excite me that much. A true story about the CIA posing as a film crew to rescue hostages during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis.
Amour – Wow, I did not enjoy this movie. Long and boring in my opinion. An older couple has a daughter (a British musician), and the wife has a stroke and it strains all facets of their relationship. This was a tough movie to get through.
Beasts of the Southern Wild – I did not enjoy this movie. I did enjoy Hushpuppy’s acting, I thought she was super cute. But the movie was not interesting to me at all. The story follows 6 year old Hushpuppy who has a challenging life in that her father’s health is failing and the area she knows as home (swamp land in the Bayou) is coming under water due to climate change.
Django Unchained – I LOVED this movie. Great acting, great plot, great everything. Could watch several more times. A German bounty hunter and a freed slave embark on a mission to free the slave’s wife from a plantation owner. Quentin Tarantino does not disappoint in both dialogue and story telling in this action pack and nail biting film.
Les Misérables – I loved this movie. I really enjoyed the singing, the acting, the scenery, etc… I’ve watched it a few times. Essentially it’s the Broadway musical but with famous people (Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Sasha Baron Cohen, etc…) doing the singing/acting/performing.
Life of Pi – Did not enjoy this movie. Too long. Kind of confusing. Wasn’t my cup of tea. The story involves a teenage Indian boy telling his epic journey of survival at sea while making the most unlikely of acquaintances (a Bengal tiger).
Lincoln – Did not like this movie at all. Boring and too long. Another Daniel Day-Lewis movie where he’s just weird/strange in his portrayal of Lincoln. The film focuses on Abraham Lincoln as President and his struggles with his own cabinet and the brutality of the Civil War.
Silver Linings Playbook – Thought this movie was just “meh”. Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Lawrence play two adults with issues as they struggle through adulthood.
Zero Dark Thirty – Ok movie, but at times I thought the filming was too dark, and I couldn’t tell what the heck was going on. The film chronicles the pursuit of Osama Bin Laden after the September 11th attacks.
Brian’s Winner:
Django Unchained – Hands down the best film out of these choices.
