Movies Came Out In (1975)
Winner:
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – A masterpiece about a rebel that self checks into an insane asylum and tries to instill life/living into the patients. One of my favorites, and I love the book too.
Barry Lyndon – Ok, a Stanley Kubrick film that wasn’t completely weird/bizarre. The biggest beef that I had with the film was the length, clocking in at over 3 hours. It could have easily just been 2 hours. In fact, I could probably edit it in iMovie and lose none of the meaning/plot. It was pretty good/interesting, the scenery/costumes were pretty cool, and the music was decent as well. The plot involves an Irishman, of no stature, marrying an English widow and essentially taking over his place in society.
Dog Day Afternoon – Never one of my favorite films. Seems way longer than 2 hours. Just didn’t enjoy it. The plot sounds pretty interesting in that it’s a bank robbery turned into a hostage situation, but it doesn’t live up to the expectations in my opinion.
Jaws – I still have trouble swimming in the water thanks to this film. Yet, I still watch it multiple times a year. I find it a very compelling story (a shark terrorizes a New England sea town) and some great acting. Hard to explain but it’s one of my faves despite scaring the crap out of me.
Nashville – Gosh this was a strange movie. I never heard of it before my movie quest. It was super long (almost 3 hours), but a lot of that was just the actors/artists singing country songs. The political angle was interesting because the candidate had a lot of views which would be popular by today’s standards (even though the film is 40+ old). I didn’t hate the movie, but I didn’t love it either. The plot involves several storylines but mainly around a political convention which exposes some scandals and lies. Would I recommend watching it? Probably not.
